My Treason

Nineteen hundred seventy-six years ago today, the battered body of Jesus of Nazareth lay in a cold, dark tomb. As the candles were snuffed out one by one and darkness engulfed us at last night's "Tenebrae" service (just as darkness once engulfed the Earth for three long days), these verses of the old hymn Herzliebster Jesu were quietly sung:

Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended,
That mortal judgment has on thee descended?
By foes derided, by thine own rejected,
O most afflicted!

Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon thee?
It was my treason, Lord, that has undone thee!
T'was I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied thee;
I crucified thee.
