The great Beverly Sills, star of La Traviata and The Muppet Show, (where she performed to rave reviews in "Pigoletto") has passed on. When I was growing up she was the only opera diva in the world as far as I was concerned -- well, her and Leontyne Price. Ms. Sills was constantly on TV singing with Carol Burnett or guest-hosting the Tonight Show.
She never was a smoker (although I recall hearing her confess to puffing on the occasional cigar in an interview once), but she died of lung cancer, rare as that's supposed to be. Christopher Reeve's wife Dana succumbed to the same thing.
