This is a disheartening denoument to the Titanic saga. The last survivor of the Titanic, Millvina Dean, who was 9 months old when it sank, is having to sell off the last bits of memorabillia from the tragedy to pay her nursing home bills. She is currently 97 years old.
The last survivor who could actually remember the Titanic died in 1996 -- before the blockbuster movie came out. Ms. Dean has refused to watch the movie, fearing it will be more than she can take.
Sad Update: Ms. Dean passed away on 31 May 2009, a month and a half after this post was written.
