LibriVox

Even though it was only 4 days long, I've been yearning for this week to be over. That's partly because I'm eager to read a few pieces of public domain literature for librivox.org.

Librivox.org was begun in 2005 with the modest goal of recording every piece of public domain literature in the world and offering it all as free downloadable audiobooks. Somewhere during a bit of Christmas vacation I listened to a few spoken works at WikiSource.org and noticed that a.) they were all marvelously well read, and b.) they all began with the same disclaimer: "This is a LibriVox recording. All LibriVox recordings are in the public domain. For more information, and to find out how you can volunteer, please visit: librivox.org."

I love reading and speaking, I love old literature, and I love free. How could I resist? So I ran over to Radio Shack to get a better microphone and recorded perhaps my favorite poem, George Herbert's Love (III), for their 19th short poetry collection. I wanted that to be the first thing I'd record, even though it didn't come out exactly as I'd like it.

But now I'm going onto bigger things: The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle from The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Adventure of the Reigate Squires from The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, and finally the 2nd half of the first chapter of Milton's Paradise Lost.
